About Costa de la Luz
The Costa de la Luz (Coast of light) is the western part of the Andalucía coastline that faces out to the Atlantic. It boasts miles of clear unpoilt beaches with golden yellow sand. The typical beaches here are more expansive and backed by sand dunes and pine trees. The temperatures are slightly milder than other coastal areas and the often strong Atlantic winds and waves are favoured by wind surfers and surfboarders alike.
Costa de la Luz tour
From north to south this is an interesting section of the coastastline. We start. at Sanlucar de Barrameda with its golden sands overlooking the River Guadalquivir and Donaña Natioinal Park. Further south, around the small villages of Chipiona and Rota we find fine beaches. The town El Puerto de Santa Maria is famous for its restaurants serving succulent king prawns washed down with chilled Manzanilla wine. The historic walled city of Cadiz is built in a Peninsular jutting into the bay of Cadiz. The isthmus joining the mainland exhibits miles of beaches and the Bay of Cadiz is a natural park.
South of the golf at Sancti Petri we find a ragged coastline dominated by coves and cliffs often backed by pine forests. The best are located just to the north of the fishing town of Barbate and are protected in the Cliffs and Pinewood of Barbate Natural Park. Trees of Barbate. Don't miss the 'trendy' coastal villages of Conil de la Frontera, Caños de Meca, and Zahara de las Atunes, not forgetting Verjer the fortified hilltop white village 10km inland. Bolonia hamlet (visit the Roman ruins) sits in a isolated cove protected by rocky headlands.

We soon reach Tarifa the windsurfing capital of Europe. Its best wind and kite surfing beaches to the north are called Playa Los Lances and Playa Valdevaqueros.
Turning the corner into the Mediterranean and skipping the industrial bay of Algeciras we should mention the unspoiled beaches to the west of the Sotogrande development. To the east near Guadiaro we can find some beautiful coves and rocky headlands which are ideal for diving. These coves are very popular on summer weekends.
